Leith Engineering was officially registered as a manufacturer of agricultural machinery and provider of general repairs in 1980. However, the foundations of the business were laid decades earlier. Wally Leith began building and selling side trailers in 1960, followed by the introduction of the “drop spreader” in 1963. This innovative machine was designed and manufactured to enable the fast and efficient application of gypsum as a soil improver, addressing the practical needs of Australian farmers.
By the mid-1970s, the business had expanded significantly, employing local staff and increasing its manufacturing capacity. As demand grew, so did the product range. The original drop spreader was redeveloped into a trailing model, produced in multiple sizes and available with either hydraulic or power take-off (PTO) drive systems.
